Hallandale Beach, FL Visit www.hallandalebeach.org/ Hallandale Beach, located in Broward County, FL is centered between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Included in the nearby communities of Aventura and Hollywood, one fines world class shopping, miles of beautiful beaches, and easy access to International Airports and Seaports. In its 4.6 sq. mile area it has a population of 37,000 in the summer and swells to over 45,000 in the winter. This part of Florida was settled in the late 1800's, when Henry Flagler was extending his Florida East Coast Railway southward from Palm Beach toward the Florida Keys and Key West. Flagler enlisted Luther Halland and Olaf Zetterlund to start a Swedish settlement south of the Danish community of Dania. (Halland was the son of a Swedish minister and a brother-in-law of one of Flagler's agents.)Mr. Halland began promoting this frost-free subtropical climate and its cheap land to freezing Northerners. In 1900 there were seven Swedish, three English and two black families in the settlement of Halland. Soon, Luther Halland set up a general store in the new community and became its first postmaster. (The name of the community of Halland, eventually became Hallandale.) Originally Halland was a community of farmers and growers who used the nearby beaches for recreation. In August 1999, the name was changed to Hallandale Beach. Hallandale had a building boom in the 1960's and 1970's, due in part to the attention drawn by the Diplomat Hotel that opened in 1958. The famous Diplomat Hotel on the beach, just across the Hallandale city line in south Hollywood, had one of the hotest night clubs in South Florida in the 1960's and early 1970's. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Jackie Gleason, Liza Minnelli, and many other famous celebrities of the time performed there.
